Telmen lake in Zavkhan province
Telmen Lake is a saltwater lake located in Telmen soum of Zavkhan province. It is 28km long, 16km wide with a surface area of 194 square km and a maximum depth of 27m. There are three lake islands in Telmen Lake and they host migratory birds. The lake has only one tributary called Khooloi River and mostly fed by rain and underground water. Area around Telmen Lake is barren with no trees and it is a combination of the steppe and the Gobi desert. Temperature ranges between -32°C during winter to 12°C during summer.
Khyargas lake in Uvs province.
Khyargas Lake located 110 km from Ulaangom, a central town of Uvs province, 30 km from Zavkhan soum, and 1300 km from Ulaanbaatar at an altitude of 1035 m above the sea level.
Khyargas is a saltwater lake amidst semi-desert in the Great Lakes Depression/Ikh Nuuruudiin Khotgor on the territory of Naranbulag, Tsagaan Khairkhan, Malchin, and Khyargas soum of Uvs province. The lake and its surrounding 332.800 ha protected area were established as a nature reserve in 2000. The lake is 75 km long, 31 km wide with a surface area of 1481 км². The average depth is 50 m and 80 m at it’s deepest. The lake is a magnet for migratory birds including its island. The lake’s main attraction is Khetsuu Khad rock on the eastern shore of the lake. Khetsuu Khad is a 5-7 km long underwater rock. Some parts of the rock sticks out of the water, look like islands where countless migratory cormorant birds attracted and nest. Khetsuu Khad rock is a favorite spot for photographers and local travelers.
The lake’s location is on the way to the adventure travel routes of western Mongolia. Not only the lake, but there are also several scenic places on the way to the lake.
Uureg lake in Uvs province
This little saline lake, located 100km away from Ulaangom, the capital of Uvs province, is between the Turgen and Tsagaan Shuvuut mountains. The lake stretches over 19.5km for 18km width for 65.5km shoreline length. Several rivers and streams such as Tsagdul and Kharigiin flow into its waters. Water temperature ranges between 14-15°C at the mouth of the lake with Kharigiin river, and is 12-13°C in central part. During winter time, from October to May the lake freezes with 1,2-1,5 meters thick layers of ice. Uureg is a semi-desert region with an arid vegetation, reminding the region of Gobi. It is the home of threatened species such as Swan Goose and Pallas’s Fish-eagle. On the site also live typical species of the Eurasian steppes such as Red foxes and Pallas’s Cats.
Uvs Lake in Uvs province
Uvs Lake is the largest saline lake (3,350 sq. km) in Mongolia and forms unique wetlands in the Great Lakes Depression. Its salinity varies between 3 and 35 g/l. With its reed beds and freshwater river deltas it provides significant nesting and resting areas for numerous migratory species. The shallow lake lies at an altitude of 759 m.
Uvs Lake is part of the Uvs-Nuur-Basin compassing different ecosystems. This area ranges from the permanent snowfields in the Turgen mountains over the lakes and wetlands areas up to the desert of Altan Els. The whole area measures 10,688 sq. km. The range lies at altitudes between 2,500 and 4,000 m.Because of this geographical situation, the Uvs Lake is subject to extreme climate fluctuations. Temperatures of – 40 °C are normal in winter, also – 58 °C are measured. In summer, the basin warms and the temperatures arrive + 40 °C. Uvs Lake underlies, compared to locations of the earth at the same altitude, both the coldest and the warmest as well as the driest conditions.
In the areas of desert and mountain, rare animals as the Mongolian gerbil, the threatened snow leopard, the wild sheep as well as the Asiatic ibex. Since 1997, the Uvs-Nuur-Basin is recognised as UNESCO biosphere reserve.
At and on the Uvs Lake, more than 220 bird species are counted. Numerous rare and threatened species are among them: Black Stork, Osprey, White-tailed Eagle, Whooper Swan and Black-headed Gull. More than 100 pairs of Spoonbills breed in this region.
Altai Tavan Bogd in Ulgii province
Altai Tavan Bogd, or ‘Five Saints’, is so named for the five large peaks which lie right on the Western Mongolian border. The tallest of these, Khuiten Uul, is the highest mountain in Mongolia, at 4,369m (about 14,300 feet). It forms the Altai Mountains tri-border between Russia, China and Mongolia. From between these permanently snow-covered peaks tumble two spectacular glaciers. The valleys heading up toward the peaks are completely empty of people and absolutely stunning. Whether you do a day hike up or make a five day hike or horse trek up from the lakes below, you’ll find visiting these peaks to be a highlight of Western Mongolia.
To visit the Altai Tavan Bogd National park peaks by vehicle, there is one access road which heads into the park east from Ulaanhus via Zagastruur. It’s a rough but very pretty drive up through the barren, rugged hills and nomad ger camps to reach the park.
Khurgan and Khoton Lake in Ulgii province.
Khoton & Khurgan are glacial, freshwater lakes, located in Altai Tavan Bogd National Park in Bayan-Ulgii, the westernmost province of Mongolia. Two lakes connected to each other by a short (2 km long) pipeline and the lakes feed the Khovd River.
Khurgan and Khoton 2 lakes situated at an elevation of around 1900m, which is the lowest point of the Mongol Altai Mountains. The lake’s average depth is 26.6 m; the maximum depth reaches approximately 58m.
From October, the surface of the lakes starts to freeze, creating then 1.3-1.6 m ice thickness.
