Yolyn Am “ Yol Valley”

Yol valley originally established to conserve the birdlife in the region, but it’s now more famous for its dramatic rocky cliffs and narrow, heavily shaded canyons that allow sheets of blue-veined ice to survive well into the summer. Yolyn Am is in the Zuun Saikhan Nuruu, 46km west of Dalanzadgad.

Bayanzag, “Flimimg Cliffs”

Flimimng Cliffs which means ‘rich in saxaul shrubs’, is more commonly known as the ‘Flaming Cliffs’, a name penned by the palaeontologist Roy Chapman Andrews. First excavated in 1922, it is renowned worldwide for the number of dinosaur bones and eggs found in the area, which you can see in museums around the world. It’s a classic desert of rock, red sands, scrub, sun and awesome emptiness. A further 22km northeast of Bayanzag is an area of sand dunes called Moltzog Els,.

Khongor Sand Dunes

Khongor sand dune are the largest and most spectacular sand dunes in Mongolia. Also known as the ‘singing dunes’, they are up to 800 m high, 20 km wide and about 100 km long. Top of the dunes can be climbed and the views of the desert from the top are indescribable.
The sounds have been variously described as singing, whistling, squeaking, roaring and booming. To stand before an enormous, gleaming white sand dune and realize that all of this was once an ancient lake bed or coastal plain is quite astonishing. The incredible roaring sounds of distant dunes is an unforgettable experience.

Kharhorin

Khar Horin, which is the ancient capital city of Mongolia, was founded 1220 in the Orkhon valley, center of the empire for more than 140 years, destroyed in 1391 by Chinese troops. Erdene-Zuu monastery which is the first Buddhist center in Mongolia. Ogodei, son and successor of Chinggis, surrounded it by a rampart measuring approximately 1.7 km by 1 km; it was during this reign that Karakorum became a true urban, diplomatic, and commercial centre.

Erdenezuu Monastery

located North West of the imperial site of Kharkhorum, this monastery was built on the site of the ruins of the ancient Mongol capital which was the main center of Buddhism. At the present, 108 stupas are surrounding the monastery.
Erdenezuu and the vagaries of history: The construction of ERdenezuu began in the 16th century and continued until the middle of the 19th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were more than 600 temple halls and places of worship there, making it the most powerful of the Kalkh monasteries. But the Purges of the 1930s finished most of the temples and today only about 20 remain. What was left of the great monastic complex was turned into a museum in 1965 and Erdenezuu re-opened as a place of worship in 1990.
